Paper boxes for maggots and a ’green’ jelly bait are helping the Hungarian supplier maintain its commitment to eco-friendly products. But, like all businesses it says there is still a long way to go.
For more than a deacade Hungarian fishing tackle supplier Energofish has been working to ensure its business is as sustainable and as environmentally-friendly as possible.
The comany’s product manager, Sándor Sujkó, told Angling International that it considers itself a pioneer in making the industry as ’green’ as possible. „ We invest a lot of energy not onlyy in making our business and products as environmentally-friendly as we can, but also ensuring the future of the sport by working with the next generation of anglers.”

Examples of its efforts to offer greener products to anglers include Go Green wegights, shopping bags of non-woven material and completely paper-based biodegradable maggot boxes for consumers.
Sujkó said that the long-term goal of the company was to offer only ’green’ products to its customers, but added that that is an impossible dream in the near future. „For items like rods, that is a pipedream, but more attainable for baits. Our first really green one was the Benzar Jelly bait, whichwe launched in 2013 nd is still popular today.
„We are currently preparing a totally new version of jelly bait which will be introduced at the beginning of the next season. We are also working on lead-free items and replacing some standard plastics with biodegradable options.
„As we continue along this road, we also have to maintain the standard and qualitiy of the baits we offer. That is a priority.”
Sujkó accepts that going green comes at a cost for the comany. „ Producing green solutions costs more than offering traditional products and in the current financial hard times it is harder to convince anglers to spend on their fishing tackle so thar they can make the world better for future generations.”
