Yes, the latter also damages the ecosystem, especially old weights made of lead, the pieces of which, when they get into the body of living beings, displace other vital metals (e.g. iron, zinc) and thus act as a strong cell poison.

In the near future, one of the greatest challenges of modern humanity will be the protection of the natural world.
